Dear Customers,

Today is my 77th birthday, and I've decided to give myself the gift of retirement. I need to start taking it easy -- getting back into painting and calligraphy, working on a Chinese translation project that has been on hold for way too long, practicing the guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle, and spending more time with my wife and cat.

I've self-published a variety of iData apps (iData 2, iData 3, iData Pro 4, iData Kwik, iData Lite, iData Mobile, and iData Mobile Plus) since 2003. I also wrote its predecessors, InfoGenie and iData Pro 1, while working for Casady & Greene, Inc. from 1988 to 2002. I was 45 years old when I became a professional programmer, having had a twenty-year military career and college before that.

The only thing that has kept me from doing this years ago is that I have many customers who have told me how much they depend on those apps, and I have been very reluctant to leave them unsupported. Over the past couple of years, I've actively searched for a person or a group who could and would take them over, but I have had no luck. Several iData customers have tried to find someone, but have also failed.

I've been working at this alone since Robin Casady retired three years ago, and it's not as much fun as it used to be. (And sales haven't been enough to pay for necessary hardware upgrades for quite a few years.)

My plan is phase out iData Pro and iData Mobile Plus over the next year, stopping development completely the day I turn 78.

Prior to that, I will attempt to fix bugs and to keep up with changes to Mac OS and iOS, so there may be a few updates during that period.  I will continue to provide tech support during that time.

Starting today, I will no longer sell iData Pro to new customers, and I will no longer add new features to either app. iData 3 customers can continue to upgrade over the coming year, but not after that.

I will keep the various User Guides online during the coming year. Before shutting down the idatapartners.com website, I will update the downloadable versions of the User Guides.

If anyone knows one or more fairly experienced Objective C programmers who might be interested in taking on iData Pro and iData Mobile Plus, feel free to put them in touch with me.

iData Pro is a flexible, easy to use, database program that can handle any number of datafiles. You design each datafile with a freeform text area and any number of optional fields (or none at all).

• The Freeform Text Area — In addition to text, the FTA can include notes, images (even PDFs), and small videos. Text in the FTA can have font and style variations, such as bold and italic (rich text).  A single record can contain text in a variety of languages, such as English, Japanese, Chinese, and Ukrainian.

• Optional Fields — Fields can be added to a datafile to provide more structure, and more options for sorting and selecting records.

• Clickable Links — Links can be added either to a field or to the FTA. Possibilities are: links to web pages, links to email addresses, links to other records in the datafile, and links for opening specific files on your hard drive or local network.

• Highly Configurable — iData Pro provides preference options that give you lots of control over how it looks and behaves, at both the application and datafile levels.

• Find Your Data —Every datafile window has a Find Box that is always available to make locating the desired record easy and fast, even in a datafile with thousands of records.

• Synchronize Datafiles Between Devices — You can synchronize datafiles with another Mac, or with an iPad or iPhone running iData Mobile Plus — to take with you on the road. Datafiles for iData Mobile Plus can be created and edited in iData Pro on the Mac, then uploaded to, and synchronized with, iData Mobile Plus on the mobile device. This makes data entry easier, using the larger Mac keyboard and iData Pro's extensive import and data manipulation features.

• Print Labels and Envelopes —Templates are provided for printing single or batch labels and envelopes. You can make your own templates with your return address, logo, or other images. Templates can even be created for printing business cards and custom forms. There is a quick print function for printing a single envelope or label from the current record.

• Extensive User Guide — iData Pro includes a detailed online User Guide that is available through its Help menu. The Help Topics index contains links to articles that are organized into three sections: Introductory Help Topics, General Help Topics, and Functional Help Topics. The Functional Help Topics articles are arranged by menu item, and they include the details of the functioning of virtually all of the iData-specific menu items.

Note for Dropbox Users: It is important that you do not store your datafiles in your Dropbox folder. Doing so can cause a variety of problems, including loss of changes during synchronization. You must create a separate folder for that purpose. The recommended place to store your datafiles is in a folder called something like iData Pro Datafiles located in your Documents folder. If you use the label and envelope printing functions of iData Pro, you should place your iData Pro Templates folder alongside the iData Pro Datafiles folder.

Upgrade Note: Beginning with version 4.0.30, iData Pro requires OS 10.10 or higher. This is due to a
                          change in the Dropbox framework.

If you are using OS 10.7 - 10.9, I can provide you with a version that does not include
the Dropbox framework. Click the Contact Us link in the sidebar to request this.
